I have Audioengine A5+. The are powered and I have cute bamboo finish. Rave reviews of ELAC Uni-fi UB5 everywhere. No direct comparison I could find. Would Elacs sound better?

Which speaker would be a better fit with the integrated amp Cambridge Audio CX A80?
1. Klipsch rp150m or
2. Elac Uni-fi UB5.
I'm concerned that the amp won't be enough to power the ELAC with its low sensitivity.

A: Cambridge CX A80 & Klipsch RP-160M

I can't speak to the ELAC's, but I'm currently running a set of Klipsch RP-160M speakers with a Cambridge CX A80 in my home office. I'm also using a Klipsch R-110SW subwoofer to fill out the low end. Audio is fed from my computer via USB Audio.

Overall I'm very pleased. The sound is detailed, well-balanced, and the sub adds punch. I upgraded to Tidal Hi Fi streaming; I can actually differentiate between 320 kbps and FLAC audio while listening to the Klipsch system (well, if I listen closely and focus on the clarity of the highs). The same couldn't be said of the Polk Audio system that the Klipsch speakers replaced. The only downside to the Klipsch system is that it's very transparent, and can expose flaws in poor-quality audio files.

Unless you're trying to fill out a very large room, I wouldn't worry about the CXA80 failing to provide sufficient power with either set of speakers. Even when I'm playing my Klipsch speakers loud, I don't think I've ever run more than 50% power. Typical listening volume is 15-25%.

Can powered speakers be also used like regular passive speakers? I live in a one bedroom studio with a medium sized room and don't have the room or the money for a bunch of electronics. But every article I read about powered speakers seem to be about monitoring. I just want something that sounds good across a variety of genres. My budget is 450 dollars. Any advice would be appreciated.

There is no reason powered speakers can't be just as high end as amp powered speakers. Some of the best studio monitors are powered speakers so as not to allow different amps to color the sound.
