Both the Bose S1 Pro and Sonos Play 5 have features and design elements that contribute to their durability.

The Bose S1 Pro has a sturdy metal grille that protects the speakers, a black polypropylene plastic enclosure that is known for its durability, and a travel bag that aids in protecting the speaker while in transit. These features make the Bose S1 Pro a reliable choice for musicians and performers who need a speaker that can withstand the rigors of touring and live performances.

On the other hand, the Sonos Play 5 has a solid, tight cabinet that is sealed to cut down on resonation and rattling. The plastic construction of the Sonos Play 5 is better for sound than metal, as it does not interfere with the speaker's performance. Additionally, the Sonos Play 5 has a carefully considered design that is both smart and sophisticated, making it a great choice for those who want a speaker that looks as good as it sounds.

Overall, both speakers are built to last and are designed to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. Whether you are a musician on the road or a music lover at home, the Bose S1 Pro and Sonos Play 5 are both excellent choices for those who want a durable and reliable speaker that delivers high-quality sound.

Connectivity

The Bose S1 Pro is better for users who prioritize Bluetooth connectivity and require a speaker with a long Bluetooth range. It can receive signals from up to 230 feet away, making it ideal for outdoor events or large indoor spaces. It is also easy to connect to, with the ability to pair with up to two devices simultaneously and a dedicated Bose Connect App for iOS and Android devices.

The Sonos Play 5, on the other hand, is better for users who prioritize Wi-Fi connectivity and require a more comprehensive connectivity experience. It can connect directly to a router using an Ethernet cable or wireless connectivity, and it uses Sonos wireless mesh network technology, which eliminates the need for additional wires.

It also offers seamless integration with other Sonos speakers and the ability to control the speaker through the Sonos app. Additionally, it offers more flexibility with voice control, as it is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Sonos devices. It is also capable of playing different songs from the same music service in different rooms or the same song in multiple rooms if you have more than one speaker.

What is the Bluetooth range of Bose S1 Pro and Sonos Play 5?

In terms of Bluetooth range, the Bose S1 Pro clearly outperforms the Sonos Play 5 as the latter does not have Bluetooth connectivity. The Bose S1 Pro can receive signals from up to 230 feet away, making it a great option for outdoor events or large indoor spaces.

Do both speakers support voice assistant integration? If yes, which voice assistants are supported?

When it comes to voice assistant integration, the Bose S1 Pro and Sonos Play 5 both require external devices to enable voice control. However, there are some differences in their compatibility with various voice assistants.

The Sonos Play 5 has a wider range of compatibility with voice assistants, as it can be controlled by Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Sonos devices. This means that users have more options when it comes to choosing a voice assistant that suits their needs. They can choose to use the voice assistant that they are most comfortable with or that they already have set up in their home.

On the other hand, the Bose S1 Pro can only be controlled by voice assistants through a connected device with Bluetooth connectivity. This means that users need to have a device that is compatible with their chosen voice assistant and that can connect to the Bose S1 Pro via Bluetooth.

This can be limiting for some users who may not have a compatible device or who may not want to use Bluetooth connectivity.

On the other hand, the Bose S1 Pro does not have a built-in microphone for voice control at all. However, the Bose S1 Pro does have a built-in 3-channel mixer that supports vocal mics, which may be useful for live performances or events.

Ultimately, the choice between these two speakers may come down to personal preference and specific needs, as both offer different features and capabilities. Are both speakers compatible with other Sonos products, such as the Sonos app and other speakers in the Sonos ecosystem?

In terms of compatibility with other Sonos products, the Sonos Play 5 is the clear winner. About our ranking methodology

Customers like Bose S1 Pro noticeably more

At ReviewFinder we prefer to focus on professional product reviews, because customer reviews can be disproportionately affected by unrelated factors such as delivery, specific seller listing problems, and, of course, fake reviews. With that said, below is the summary of consumer sentiment.

Bose S1 Pro
Sonos Play 5
Consumer score (CS) is a normalized computed representation of customers' sentiment towards a product.
CS of 10 is similar to a 4.8 star review, CS of 0 is similar to a 2 star review.

Bose S1 Pro, the cheaper option, tends to get more favorable reviews than Sonos Play 5.

As can be seen in the chart above, median best-selling bluetooth speaker receives a consumer score of 9.1 (great). Bose S1 Pro ranks higher than that and Sonos Play 5 ranks lower than that.

Water Resistance

Speakers range from not being able to handle even a drop of water to being able to be fully submerged in water for several minutes. Do you plan to take your speaker outside? To the beach? To the pool? In the shower? Then you definitely need to verify the level of water resistance before purchasing. You can tell the water resistance by the IP rating—the higher the rating, the more resistant the speaker is to the elements. For reference, the first digit refers to dust protection and the second digit refers to water protection. It reads as: IP68. Anything higher than IP66 will be dust- and splash-proof, meaning it can handle some contact with water, but cannot be fully submerged or soaked.

Battery

Battery life for Bluetooth speakers is measured in milliampere hours (mAh). Manufacturers will report the battery life of a speaker in the average number of hours it takes to empty from a full charge. Keep in mind this number is based on medium levels of usage. If you play the speaker on full volume, it will drain the battery faster. Some specialty features like using the speaker to charge your phone or casting an LED light show will also drain the battery faster. The manufacturer reported number is just an estimate, and may be slightly different based on your usage.

It’s also important to consider is the type of battery. Rechargeable lithium-ion (LI-ion) batters are ideal, but some speakers only take standard or rechargeable AA/AAA/C/D batteries. You may even find Bluetooth speakers that recharge via solar power—great for outdoor use!
